Why would parents of gifted kids need their own support group?
The Columbus Group, a focus group on the needs of the gifted in 1991, explains:
Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm... The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching and counseling in order for them to develop optimally.
When we understand gifted kids, parents can choose to parent in ways that support potential and protect their vulnerable and unique children...
SENG- Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted-Model Parent Groups, known as SMPGs, are a forum for parents to share and learn more about parenting gifted & talented kids.
SENG Model Parent Groups in San Jose
This series of meetings with a group of other parents of gifted, talented & twice exceptional children is a forum to address the demands of parenting with other parents who truly understand the struggles. A primary theme is "flowing with, rather than fighting against" children's giftedness and the personal characteristics which often accompany exceptional intellectual talent and creativity. GATE kids are frequently intense, strong-willed and may have endless curiosity, leading to more difficulty than success at home and at school.
• SENG is not a GATE advocacy group.
• SENG in San Jose is a forum for parents to gain exposure to a variety of parent-child experiences, support one another and share. Parents gain insight about how parenting styles can prevent and solve problems.
• SENG is about encouraging positive growth to guide and nurture your own children.
These groups are held throughout the year in a "book club" format using Parent's Guide to Gifted Children by James Webb, Ph.D. et al.
